Jo Butler

Welcome to my website!

The unique character of our town stems from its diversity and the financial health of its citizens and government. As an experienced Borough Council member I will continue to concentrate on protecting that diversity and strengthening the economic foundation of our community for the present and into the future.

Municipal Experience

I have served as Borough Council’s liaison to the Recreation Board, Health Commission, Traffic & Transportation Committee, and Princeton’s Joint Bicycle & Pedestrian Safety Committee.  Currently I am a member of the Borough’s Personnel and Public Safety Committees and  a member of the Consolidation Transition Task Force.  I understand the challenges facing municipal government, and I know how to make the parts add up to a strong well-functioning whole.

Fiscal Accountability

As founding Chair of the Citizens Financial Advisory Task Force, Council member I know where to find savings and efficiencies. I have experience maintaining the Borough four-year record of zero municipal tax increases.  I will bring that fiscal discipline to the whole community.

Public Safety and Preparedness

As a member of the Transition Task Force’s Public Safety Subcommittee and the Borough’s Public Safety Committee, I understand the issues and challenges facing our most critical departments. I can optimize resources to keep Princeton safe and prepared at the lowest cost possible to taxpayers.

Parks, Recreation and Open Space

Community Park Pool will open on time and on budget on Memorial Day.  I led the effort in the Borough to end the debate and secure funding so our community can enjoy a beautiful public pool for years to come.  Serving in the new municipality my experience as a strong public advocate will protect and advance Princeton’s investment in our parks and open space.

Biography

Besides being a longtime Borough resident and mother of two, I have spent my time in Princeton actively participating and volunteering within our community. I was privileged to be a member of the Executive Committee of the Friends of the Public Library, serving as the Auction Chair for the first benefit in the new building and the Chair of the entire event the following year. I belong to the Board of People & Stories/Gente y Cuentos, a wonderful organization that provides opportunities to explore literature to those who would not normally be able to do so. I have also enjoyed my time serving in leadership positions in the Parents Associations at the schools attended by my children.

Professionally, I earned my MBA from Northwestern University and worked for Salomon Brothers before heading to the Chicago Board of Trade to trade interest rate futures. I currently work for Wickenden Associates, an educational consulting firm that specializes in Head of School searches for independent schools. I consult on searches and also serve as a member of the research team.

With your help, I can bring my experience as a volunteer, businesswoman and experienced Borough Council member to a consolidated Princeton so that we can ensure the continuing diversity of Princeton and improve the financial future of our community. If you share my vision of a diverse and fiscally responsible Borough, I hope you will vote for me on Tuesday, June 5, 2012.
